BREAKING THE STATIC

Year 2

“Breaking the Static” was the response to an 8 week brief where an “Experimental House” was the focus.
This conceptual project had the aim of rethinking how we interact with living spaces and how we can go beyond the “usual” while changing elements in a unit’s facade.

During observation of the area around 49 Gower Street, there seemed to be a recurring issue with loitering, particularly around a corner where pedestrians often gathered.
This behavior not only might detract from the aesthetic of the urban space but also contributes to cleanliness concerns.

Inspired by these observations, I embarked on a design project aimed at addressing this issue through the innovative use of kinetic facades.
My concept revolves around a facade that incorporates rotational and openable pieces, which dynamically adapt to environmental and pedestrian activity.
This way, the architectural interventions could change the way residents interact with their living spaces and discourage prolonged loitering and directs foot traffic in a way that promotes movement and engagement.

The proposal involves assigned parts of the facade moving at certain parts of the day, according to their function.
This way the facade itself could be an ever-lasting active part of the neighbourhood.
